The modern name alabandite come into use gradually. The term \u003Cem>alabandine\u003C\u002Fem> was first used by the French Mineralogist F. S. Beudant in 1832 in his \u003Cem>Traite Elementaire de Mineralogie\u003C\u002Fem> for a mineral first described earlier from Nagyág (today: Săcărâmb), Romania. The mineral was named as  \u003Cem>Schwarzerz\u003C\u002Fem>  by the local miners. Beudant derived this name (\u003Cem>alabandine\u003C\u002Fem>) from the Spanish \u003Cem>alabandina sulfúrea\u003C\u002Fem> (sulfuric manganese), a term used by del Rio (1804) for the same substance. del Rio used the term \u003Cem>alabandina\u003C\u002Fem> as a synonym of manganese in his binominal nomenclature (Papp 2004). It is not clear why del Rio used the term \u003Cem>alabandicus\u003C\u002Fem> for manganese, but Papp suggest that it may be related to the usage of both manganese minerals and \u003Cem>lapis alabandicus\u003C\u002Fem> in glass making.\r\nThe \u003Cem>lapis alabandicus\u003C\u002Fem> was a purplish black stone found near Alabanda, Asia Minor (near todays Araphisar, Turkey) mentioned by Pliny the elder (23-79) in his \u003Cem>Naturalis Historia\u003C\u002Fem>. \u003Cem>Lapis alabandicus\u003C\u002Fem> was known to be fusible and used in making glass. There are some small crystals of proustite and another unknown minerals also on the specimen but not readily apparent on the photo. The specimen is in the collection of Bill Pinch, of Tucson Arizona. The specimen was purchased in Lima Peru by Jaroslav Hyrsl from an old collection. It was by far the best specimen of the species in the collection. It is not known how many specimens of alabandite that Uchucchacua has produced but if it has produced many alabandite specimens, few of them have survived.
