Schrauf was professor of Mineralogy and curator of the Imperial Hofmineralien Cabinet, University of Vienna. Schrauf was an internationally important morphological crystallographer and author. He wrote \"Atlas der Krystallformen des Mineralreiches\" and the much honored textbook \"Lehrbuch der physikalischen Mineralogie\". He worked with Gustav Tschermak in editing the journal \"Mineralogische Mitteilungen\".
