He continued his studies (languages, philosophy) and was ordained a priest in 1914.
He then turned to the natural sciences and trained as a biologist. Sent to Strasbourg in 1923, he completed his Bachelor of Science degree with a certificate in geology. He then specialised in the study of petrography and prepared a doctoral thesis, which he defended in 1931, on ‘Les Marbres du Calcaire Carbonifère en Bas-Boulonnais’.
Jacques de Lapparent entrusted him with the practical work of petrography and brought him into the university as an assistant. Father Derville continued his personal work, as well as continuing the school of sedimentary petrography of Lucien Cayeux and Jacques de Lapparent.
A lover of apostolate work among young people, Derville founded a scout troop in Strasbourg, to which he devoted all his spare time; he saw to their spiritual formation and developed their naturalist talents.
When war was declared in September 1939, Derville followed the University of Strasbourg to Clermont-Ferrand. From 1939 to 1945, he was head of the petrography department there, continuing his scientific research and starting prehistoric excavations in the Auvergne region. Returning to Strasbourg in 1945, he remained at the Institut des Sciences Géologiques until his retirement in 1957. Every year, he continued to take an interest in prehistory during his holidays.
One of his students in Canada asked him to come and take up the post of director of a research laboratory for the study of rocks in the province of Quebec. Derville spent two years working in Canada, but the harsh Canadian winters took their toll on his health, and he had to return to France in the autumn of 1959.
He gradually had to cut back on his work because of the illness that plagued him throughout the winter, and he died on 20 April 1961.
Many generations of students benefited from his teaching and were able to appreciate his high level of professionalism, in the service of great scientific value. Numerous notes (the last part even after his death) attest to his activity as a researcher."","2025-08-11 12:14:19",[],[],[],[71
54362,"Biagioniite","Tl2SbS2","6.192",3230,[78
1743,"Gabe Gottes Mine, Sankt Jakob vein, Neuenberg, Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, Colmar-Ribeauvillé, Haut-Rhin, Grand Est, France",48.2136111,7.1588889,"France",6,[86,89,93,97,100,104,109
16107404,"Weil, R.
