Mr. Hanahan was on the faculty of Abbey College in North Carolina from 1952 to 1987, teaching geology, geography and Spanish and ultimately serving as chair of the Geosciences Division. He was highly regarded as a dedicated and effective educator. After his retirement, he continued as professor emeritus. Mr. Hanahan built a fine personal mineral collection with a particular specialty in North Carolina specimens, but he is best known as a strong proponent of the mineral collecting hobby. He served as a leader in numerous amateur mineralogical organizations, he generously supported museum mineral collections both as a specimen donor and in volunteer curatorial roles and he fostered collector-oriented magazines, including serving as an executive editor of Rocks & Minerals for many years.
