Dana (1892) mentioned litharge, also as an artificial product, without indicating that there might be a natural equivalent. Litharge was established, as a polymorph of massicot by Esper S. Larsen Sr. in 1917 supposedly as a new mineral, based on optical examination of artificial and natural specimens. Edgder Wherry (1917) proposed the name \"lithargite,\" but that name did not achieve acceptance.
