The style is, for Tsumeb, quite rare actually and dates to teh oldest workings of the upper oxidation zone. While not the most gemmy kind of mimetite, the overall look of this piece is still fascinating and worth adding to any diverse Tsumeb suite CKTSU-13 - Cerussite - $450 keytsumeb01-013 Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Namibia Miniature, 4.6 x 3.9 x 2.6 cm Aesthetically perched on brown limonite is a colorless, elongated twin of cerussite, 2.6 cm long, which exhibits superb adamantine luster and super clarity. There are additional smaller crystals which have been partially or totally pseudomorphed by the limonite it seems. This major crystal is a doubly-terminated floater just sitting there, unlikely as it looks. It is pristine save for a tiny, tiny, bit of wear on the smaller end's tip. The color is a saturated yellow, nearly the best you can get for the locality and far more desirable than orange-yellow hues. It is brilliantly sparkling in light, and colorful and complete all around 360 degrees. In fact, this is one of the finer large mimetites from this find I have seen survive to this day, 40 years later. It would, to my eye, rank even higher than the well known pieces in the Romero Mexican collection, which I recently handled. The color is a very intense orangey-yellow hue. ALL such mimetites as this were collected in a single large find in end of 1968 and start of 1969 by Benny Fenn (right before the Tucson show of that year!), from a one-time pocket at a small prospect. It was literally a small prospect, not even a developing mine, and it never panned out or produced more specimens again. Despite attempts to find another mimetite pocket, no more ever came out after one release in 1969 , which was sold off at the Tucson show of that year. These remain unique in the world for their overall aspect; and large, colorful pieces like this are treasured by those who have them. Even at the time, this would have been considered exceptional for its size and all-around aesthetics. Some pieces were sprinkled lightly with mimetite (much of it white), but this one has extraordinarily rich coverage of yellow mimetite and thus good contrast that is lacking in the few others i have even seen for sale over the years. The specimen in the University of Arizona Mineral Museum, illustrated in that issue of the MR, is 17 cm compared to the 12 cm size here, but it lacks the aesthetics and contrast of this piece to my eye . In any case, most have long since disappeared into museums and collections. This was the rarest in the find and the combination i think is completely and totally unique as well as beautiful, compared to anything else out there for the species. This is a beautiful mimetite, with a lateral vein of sharp wulfenites running across it. The color of the mimetite is the DARKEST GREEN I have ever seen in the species and I would have sworn was arsendescloizite - but lab tests done quickly at the University of Arizona show this to be in fact mimetite of a unique hue. The wulfenite has a more orange hue , when associated with the mimetite, than other wulfenites from the main portion of the pocket. Only about 20 pieces out of 400 found had ANY association with the mimetite in quality. Of them, this is one of the two best specimens. My guess, personally, is that no more will be found. In any case, its an incredible display piece as well as significant for both species and locality. When I got it in the Hansen collection labelled as a pyro (but never checked by analysis), it had me puzzled. Pyromorphite is not reported in crystalline form of any quality from Tsumeb and this would have been a miraculous piece. Further study has confirmed it is actually arsentsumebite pseudomorph after mimetite, which makes more sense mineralogically as well as in terms of the crystal form present (which wasn't hexagonal). The piece is exceedingly rich, then, for this very rare species. Despite a few broken crystals, it is also very showy and displayable. Specimens of this type were reported to have been found in the upper oxidation zone , and so it most likely dates to 75 years or more in age. Significant and rare!
