He obtained a Ph.D. in Geology at the University of California, Berkeley in 1964, and upon joining the University of California, Riverside in 1969, he became heavily involved with the Deep Sea Drilling Project and the subsequent Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) and Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP).
