Von Prehn was a governor of Cape of Good Hope (1779-1780) until he was dismissed. He was a naturalist and mineral collector who brought the first specimens of his namesake mineral to Europe. It is unknown how the mineral came to the attention of Werner. A considerable mystique and folklore have surrounded Prehn and prehnite. The appellation "von" was supposedly bestowed on Prehn for his military service during the Seven Year's War, but there are no printed records available to substantiate the claim. It has been claimed that prehnite was the first mineral named for a person. In 1813, Richard Chenevix wrote a lengthy article (100+ pages) decrying the naming of minerals for people [citation needed - see https://www.mindat.org/mesg-668388.html ].","2026-03-28 16:33:07",[],[],[97,104,115,122,130,138,147,155
34,"Aerinite","Trigonal","(Ca,Na)6(Fe3+,Fe2+,Mg,Al)4(Al,Mg)6Si12O36(OH)12(CO3) · 12H2O","(Ca5.1Na0.5)(Fe3+,Al,Fe2+,Mg)4(Al,Mg)6[HSi12O36(OH)12][(CO3)1.2(H2O)12]",31315
210,"Analcime","Triclinic","Na(AlSi2O6) · H2O","Na(AlSi2O6)·H2O",5,5.5,"2.24","2.271",1298
478,"Babingtonite","Ca2Fe2+Fe3+Si5O14(OH)","3.34","3.26",29192
859,"Calcite","Ca(CO3)","CaCO3","2.7102","2.711",4401
1340,"Datolite","Monoclinic","CaB(SiO4)(OH)","2.96","3.00",6856
1746,"Greenockite","Hexagonal","CdS",3.5,"4.8","4.824",29813
3150,"Pennantite","Mn2+5Al(Si3Al)O10(OH)8","Mn2+5Al(AlSi3O10)(OH)8",2.5,"2.89","3.18
3309,"Pumpellyite-(Mg)","Ca2MgAl2(Si2O7)(SiO4)(OH)2 · H2O","Ca2MgAl2[Si2O6OH][SiO4](OH)2(OH)","3.20",20158,[],[164
15978,"Karoo dolerites, Cradock, Inxuba Yethemba Local Municipality, Chris Hani District Municipality, Eastern Cape, South Africa",-32.247938,25.861132,"South Africa",1932,[172,175,179,183,187,192,197,201,205,209,214,219,224,228,233,237,242,247,252,257,262
16120650,"Klaproth, M.H. At its simplest, a mineral is a naturally-occurring solid chemical. Currently, there are over 4900 named and described minerals - about 200 of them are common and about 20 of them are very common. Mineral classification is based on anion chemistry. Major categories of minerals are: elements, sulfides, oxides, halides, carbonates, sulfates, phosphates, and silicates.

Elements are fundamental substances of matter - matter that is composed of the same types of atoms. At present, 118 elements are known (four of them are still unnamed). Of these, 98 occur naturally on Earth (hydrogen to californium). Most of these occur in rocks & minerals, although some occur in very small, trace amounts. Only some elements occur in their native elemental state as minerals.

To find a native element in nature, it must be relatively non-reactive and there must be some concentration process. Metallic, semimetallic (metalloid), and nonmetallic elements are known in their native state as minerals.

Silver is part of the gold-group of metallic elements. Silver is a precious metal, but is far less valuable than gold or platinum. Silver usually occurs as a silver sulfide mineral, but it also occurs in nature in its native state, often in the form of twisted wires. Silver is moderately soft and has a silvery-white color on fresh surfaces that tarnishes to darker colors. Elemental silver in nature is often found alloyed with other metals. Naturally alloyed gold-silver is called electrum.

The colorful silver-prehnite-copper specimen shown above is from northern Michigan's Portage Lake Volcanic Series, an extremely thick, Precambrian-aged, flood-basalt deposit that fills up an ancient continental rift valley. This rift valley, analogous to the present-day East African Rift Valley, extends from Kansas to Minnesota to the Lake Superior area to southern Michigan. Unlike many flood basalts (e.g., Deccan Traps, Siberian Traps, Columbia River), the Portage Lake only filled up the rift valley. The unit is exposed throughout Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, in the vicinity of the towns of Houghton & Hancock.

The Portage Lake succession thickens northward through the Keweenaw, up to >5.5 km worth of section in places. The dominant rock type is basalt - vesicular basalts, for the most part. Most of the original vesicles (gas bubbles) have since been filled up with a wide variety of different minerals. A vesicular basalt that has had its vesicles filled up with minerals is called an amygdaloidal basalt (try saying that five times quickly). Keweenaw amygdaloidal basalts have long had significant economic importance because native copper (Cu) is one of the more common vesicle-filling and fracture-filling minerals. Native silver (Ag) is sometimes found closely associated with copper.

Silver and copper mineralization occurred during the late Mesoproterozoic, at 1.05 to 1.06 billion years ago. The Portage Lake host rocks are 1.093 to 1.097 billion years old.

Locality: Quincy Mine, Hancock, Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA","James St. John",3086,2320
28377,"https://commons.wikimedia.org/?curid=10150042","Robert M. We bought many of the available specimens from this pocket, all that were at the show back then. This was the largest specimen in this update, with crystals to 3 cm. Some of these crystal casts are open on the front, so you can see their hollow structure. What we describe here as prehnite “crystals”, for the sake of simplicity, are actually hollow prehnite casts of the original glauberite crystals, with the beautiful mint-green prehnite (very difficult to photograph and prettier in person) perfectly retaining the form of the glauberite crystals! In 1788, that was a small revolution. It has been claimed that prehnite was the first mineral ever named after a person[1]. Whether the title is strictly true is debated. The honour fits all the same.

The story begins at the Cape of Good Hope, where the Dutch East India Company kept its post for ships rounding southern Africa. Hendrik von Prehn (1733–1785) was a colonel in the company's service[2]. He commanded the colony's military forces from 1768 onwards[3], and was also a naturalist and mineral collector. In 1774, during his time at the Cape, he found the pale green crystals that would later carry his name[4]. He brought the first specimens back to Europe. He went on to serve briefly as governor of the colony in 1779–1780, before being dismissed.

Fourteen years later, in 1788, the Saxon mineralogist Abraham Gottlieb Werner published a description of the new mineral and named it for Von Prehn[5]. Werner's nomenclature ruled European mineralogy for a generation. How the specimens reached his hands is unrecorded. The type material came from the **Karoo dolerites of Cradock**, in what is today the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa[6] — a basalt-rich landscape where the mineral fills cavities in dark volcanic rock.

The naming did not pass without dissent. In 1813 the Anglo-Irish chemist Richard Chenevix published a long article — more than a hundred pages — arguing against the practice of naming minerals after people[7]. The polemic landed too late. The convention had already taken hold, and prehnite was joined within decades by hundreds of *-ites* honouring chemists, collectors and patrons.","claude-opus-4-7","1.7.0
"Prehnite has no industrial use of consequence. The mineral is not mined for bulk extraction, refined into a feedstock, or processed in chemical chains. It surfaces in the modern world along two narrow paths instead — one decorative, one scientific.

The decorative path is **lapidary**. Clear, pale-green stones of good colour are cut into cabochons and the occasional faceted gem, sold under the trade name **Cape emerald**[1]. Extensive deposits of gem-quality material occur in the basalt tableland surrounding Wave Hill Station, in the central Northern Territory of Australia[2]. The market is small. Prehnite is a collector's gemstone — sought for its glassy, slightly translucent green by jewellers and amateur lapidaries, not for high-end fine jewellery.

The scientific path is **petrologic indication**. Prehnite is the indicator mineral of the prehnite–pumpellyite facies, a low-grade metamorphic regime that takes its name from it[3]. The facies records temperatures of 250–350 °C and pressures of roughly two to seven kilobars[4]. When a geologist finds prehnite growing in a metabasalt — a low-grade altered basalt — the rock has been heated and squeezed within that specific window. The regime sits between the zeolite facies that precedes it and the greenschist facies that follows. The facies is typical of the sub-seafloor alteration of oceanic crust around mid-ocean ridge spreading centres[5]."]
