Wallerius used several names for a skutterudite-like mineral (kobaltglants, kobaltmalm, minera cobalti cinerea, cobaltum arsenico mineralisatum). Named speiskobalt by Werner (see Hausmann, 1813), but also seemingly equally applied to safflorite and smaltite. Smaltite is the arsenic deficient variety of Skutterudite, now stripped of its species name. Its habit is so radically different from the \"classical\" style of lumpy crystals on a massive ore, with no contrast. Instead, we have this cityscape arrangement of crystals, reticulated (twinned?!) and complexly intergrown, arranged inside a natural cavity of fluorite and barite matrix. Its long history surely started in the mid to late 1800s and then we can track it from within the collection of noted collector Albert Petereit (1860-1917), who sold it to A.F. Holden (1863-1913) in June of 1910. He donated his substantial mineral collection to the Harvard Mineralogical Museum in 1911. At its simplest, a mineral is a naturally-occurring solid chemical.  Currently, there are over 5600 named and described minerals - about 200 of them are common and about 20 of them are very common.  Mineral classification is based on anion chemistry.  Major categories of minerals are: elements, sulfides, oxides, halides, carbonates, sulfates, phosphates, and silicates.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The arsenide minerals contain one or more arsenide anions (As-3).  The arsenides are usually considered together with the sulfide minerals, the sulfarsenide minerals, and the telluride minerals.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Skutterudite is an uncommon cobalt-nickel arsenide mineral ((Co,Ni)As3).  Skutterudite has a metallic luster, bright silvery color, black streak, no cleavage, moderate hardness (H = 5.5 to 6), and moderately high density.  It can be an important ore mineral of cobalt and nickel, and is typically found in hydrothermal veins.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The beautifully crystalline skutterudite seen here is from a cobalt-nickel mineralized vein in a fault system within the Bou Azzer-El Graara Ophiolite of Morocco. Pink calcite fluorescence. The last mines closed in 1910 and wonderful specimens, such as this probably date to the mid to late 1800s. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 3002 and acquired at the San Jose Show in 1963. Kay assembled a nice suite of classics and rarities from this famed district. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record).
