He worked at the University of Copenhagen Geological Museum from 1866 to 1889, making nine journeys to Greenland, one of which lasted 2.5 years. From 1889 until his death, he was state geologist at the Geological Survey of Denmark.\r\n\r\nOriginally named simply steenstrupine.
