This rock comes from South Africa's Kalahari Manganese Field, where sugilite has an intensely deep purple color.  The material ranges from well crystallized to massive and cryptocrystalline.  It forms part of a skarn, the result of metasomatism by hydrothermal fluids moving through sedimentary manganese oxide rocks of the Hotazel Formation.
