The most surprisingly spectacular are the blood red Wulfenite crystals in a prismatic habit, up to 1 mm in size sitting on a carpet of green velvet Malachite. Wulfenite is rare in Katanga (only 2 valid localities for this huge province) and in Musonoi they are at their best. They are associated with well terminated and bright yellow Kasolite crystals reaching 2 mm in size. Some are showing phantom growth. Also present are green, transparent platy Torbernite crystals reaching 4 mm on edge. The edges of the Torbernite are worth a closer look - some of them are the matrix for very small Guilleminite crystal clusters. This specimen was recovered during the removal of the U-dump in the early 1990’s. Musonoi has ceased producing minerals since then. Musonoi is the Type Locality for Guilleminite. This is a beautiful mimetite, with a lateral vein of sharp wulfenites running across it. The color of the mimetite is the DARKEST GREEN I have ever seen in the species and I would have sworn was arsendescloizite - but lab tests done quickly at the University of Arizona show this to be in fact mimetite of a unique hue. The wulfenite has a more orange hue , when associated with the mimetite, than other wulfenites from the main portion of the pocket. Only about 20 pieces out of 400 found had ANY association with the mimetite in quality. Of them, this is one of the two best specimens. My guess, personally, is that no more will be found. In any case, its an incredible display piece as well as significant for both species and locality.
